Studies have proven that patients enrolled in hospice, within 30 days of death, benefit from increased quality of care while lowering overall costs. This is also proven true for individuals in hospice 53-105 days before death. Hospice enables a patient to receive care where they are comfortable and is not restricted to hospitals.
A study conducted at the Icahn School of Medicine analyzed Medicare claims to find the amount of money saved by those using hospice. Hospice use was proven to result in higher savings, along with lower rates of in-hospital service use and death.
The study reported that patients enrolled in hospice 1-7 days before death saved $2,650 to Medicare, 8-14 days saved $5,040, and 15-30 days saved $6,430. The Medicare hospice benefit for those enrolled 53-105 days before death has also been proven to be about $2,561.
